Are you sweet or a little bit salty?
If you’re like me you can be both, depending on the time of day (and maybe the company!) And that’s a good thing. Too sweet and we’re cloying. Too salty and, well, we can be hard to swallow.
It’s probably best to aim for a combination of both. In life and in food!
That’s why these Valentine’s Day Chocolate Covered Pretzels are absolutely perfect. They’re sweet. They’re salty. And they’re SO GOOD!
Believe it or not, I didn’t taste chocolate covered pretzels until I was in my 40’s. Our friends in Western Pennsylvania took us to this amazing candy shop in Canonsburg — Sarris Candies. The owners gifted us several packages of their famous pretzels, and I lie not, they were gone before we got back to our friends’ house.
They were sweet and salty and crunchy and, yes, super easy to eat.

At the rate they were disappearing we knew that we would have to learn to make our own!
how to make valentine’s day chocolate covered pretzels
Fortunately, chocolate covered pretzels are super easy to make and can be decorated for any holiday or season. Since I’m a huge fan of Valentine’s Day, I wanted to splash out my favorite snack with the traditional pink, red and white.
Gather the ingredients:
- chocolate flavored melting wafers (I prefer Ghirardelli brand)
- candy melts in pink, red and white
- heart shaped sprinkles
- pretzel rods
And the supplies:
- heat proof measuring cup
- spoon
- fork
- parchment paper
- Valentine’s Day gift bags
- First line a tray or baking sheet with parchment paper. You’ll be throwing chocolate around so you’ll want something to catch the drips!
- Place the chocolate melting wafers in the measuring cup and melt according to the package directions. In my microwave it took about 1.5 minutes at 50% power. The 50% power is important as full strength will probably burn the chocolate! Stir well.
- Dip the pretzel rods about 3/4ths of the way into the chocolate, then let the excess drip back into the cup. *If you’re using sprinkles go ahead and add those now before the chocolate dries.
- Place on parchment paper to harden.
- If you’re not using sprinkles you should let the chocolate harden completely before drizzling with the colors.
- Now melt your colored wafers (one color at a time) in the microwave the same way you melted the chocolate (50% power).
- Now for the fun! Dip a fork into the melted color and sling onto the pretzels. (You can drizzle if you have a tamer style. But I sling.) A side to side motion is best. Try to have the colors liquid enough (melted) so that that don’t GLOP on. When you’re satisfied with one color, clean the measuring cup (see tips below) and melt the next color. I did red, then pink, then white.
- Let everything harden (this won’t take long) then serve or package in decorative Valentine’s Day plastic goody bags for gifting.
