It’s funny how cooking and skin care overlap
I’ve been making skin care products for years (dare I say decades). Most of the time, I’ve managed to keep all my soap/skincare/candle making supplies in my studio where they can live and be handy whenever I’m ready to whip up a batch of something for our shop. But for some reason I can never seem to remember to stock rolled oats and powdered milk in the studio. Baking soda, yes. Cornstarch, no problem. Citric acid, I have a 50# bag of it out there!
So making milk bath always involves a quick run to the kitchen to stock up on supplies. I love using natural materials that are pure enough to eat (that we actually do eat) to create products for my skin. PLEASE NOTE: I am in no way saying that you should or could eat this milk bath! : )
Truthfully, I’m more of a shower person, but there are times when a long soak in the tub is the only solution. Times when you need to be COMFORTED. Like when you’ve had your second COVID shot and are feeling kind of puny. Or when there were way too many decisions to make during the day and you just need to get in a soothing hot bath and not let anyone talk to you for at least an hour. Hypothetical example of course…
Fortunately, making fizzy milk bath is super easy. Keep the whole batch in a jar in your bathroom or divvy it up as gifts to share with your friends.
DIY Fizzy Oatmeal Milk Bath Powder ingredients
You’ll need:
Dry (Powdered) Milk. Helps smooth, nourish and moisturize your skin plus calm inflammation.
Old Fashioned Rolled Oats. Moisturizing, soothing and inflammation reducing.
Baking Soda. Antifungal and deoderizing qualities plus it makes your bathwater feel silky smooth.
Cornstarch. To sooth and calm dry skin.
Citric Acid. Puts the fizz in Fizzy Oatmeal Milk Bath!
Oatmeal, Milk and Honey Fragrance Oil. A nice gentle scent that mirrors the milk bath ingredients. If you prefer you may use an essential oil like lavender (nice and calming) or leave your product unscented. I use the OMH fragrance oil from Symphony Scents and have for years (no affiliate code there — just a link to a trustworthy company!)
You’ll also need:
Ninja Fit Blender or other small blender
Glass mixing bowl. You should use glass so it won’t hold the scent from fragrance oil.
Stainless measuring cups and spoons.
Jars or bags for packaging.
how to make DIY Fizzy Oatmeal Milk Bath Powder
- Put on a mask to keep powder out of your lungs. If you wear nail polish you may want to wear gloves as well since citric acid can be tough on manicures.
- Pulse dry milk and oats in a small blender to a flour-like consistency.
- Add to a largish bowl along with baking soda, cornstarch and citric acid and mix well.
- Add fragrance oil and mix well using your hands to break up any little clumps and distribute the oil.
- Package in jars or plastic bags — something that will keep out moisture in the bathroom.
- Add about ½ cup to your bath. I like to do this after I’m in the tub so I can delight in the fizziness! Makes about 4½ cups.
project notes
- I recommend that you wear protective covering over your mouth and nose while making this project to keep tiny “dust” particles out of your lungs.
- Feel free to use whatever fragrance oil or essential oil you have on hand — just make sure it’s safe to use on skin!
- Why do I grind up the milk? I just like the texture better that way. You can absolutely use it straight outta the box.
- The absolute easiest way to make this would be to just put all the ingredients in a food processor and press Start. This would require that you buy a food processor to use ONLY for bath and body products and not the one you use in your kitchen. (The fragrance oils would scent the food processor bowl and make your pesto taste like flowers or whatever fragrance you’re using!)
