Where does the time go?
Do you find yourself rushing around every morning, wondering where you left your shoes, speed drinking coffee and maybe even spilling it on your wrinkled skirt? (Whoops! Forgot to iron it last night and DEFINITELY don’t have time to iron it this morning!)
If this sounds familiar you owe it to yourself to get a plan.
Here’s how to develop a plan to simplify your morning routine:
1. GET UP EARLIER
I know, I know, but if you get up even 30 minutes earlier it will make a huge difference in your day.
That 30 minutes will allow you to meditate for 10 minutes, read one chapter in a book and do 10 minutes of cardio, stretching or strength exercises.
Imagine the sense of accomplishment you’ll feel!
With the extra time, you’ll be able to visit with your spouse or kids, practice a new skill or just drink your coffee while relaxing on the patio.
For loads of ideas on this check out a book that changed my life: The Miracle Morning by Hal Elrod.
2. GATHER YOUR CLOTHES THE NIGHT BEFORE
Trying to figure out what to wear is never easy—and especially not in the morning when you’re running late!
So before you go to bed, decide on your outfit for the next day.
- Is it washed, ironed and ready to go?
- Can you locate matching shoes? (both of them!)
Set everything out so you can calmly get dressed and feel great about your appearance.
3. MAKE A TO-DO LIST
While you’re feeling calm in the evening, take a few minutes to write down everything you need to do the next day. This might include work projects, people to phone, emails to answer. Having a checklist means less forgotten meetings or tasks.
Make sure to include not only meetings and/or job related obligations, but also personal goals and tiny steps you can take to move you closer to achieving your dreams.
For me having a cute checklist is a big motivator. Get our free to-do list, grocery list, daily creative goals and kitchen equivalency cheat sheet to help you get organized!
4. PREPARE FOR ERRANDS
There’s nothing worse that getting to the post office and realizing you left the packages at home!
So the night before, go ahead and gather everything you’ll need to complete your errands.
I put a giant IKEA bag by the front door and drop in all the packages to be mailed, dry cleaning documents to be dropped off, library books to return, etc as I think of them. (I love these bags because they’re HUGE and super strong.)
In the morning I can just grab and go!
5. GET THE COFFEE READY
Whether you use a French press or a super duper Technivorm Moccamaster (take a look at your own risk…pretty sure you’ll want one!) making coffee is much easier if you gather all the supplies the night before. Fill the kettle or water dispenser, measure out the coffee and wash your favorite mug.
In the morning, your groggy-eyed self will only have to push a button!
It’s easy to simplify your morning routine
Just remember: A calm and peaceful morning begins the night before.
By making a habit of doing a bit of prep work in the evening and setting your clock 1/2 hour early, you’ll easily simplify your morning routine.
